New Books & Novel Discoveries (October 2024)

I think this is the longest I’ve neglected posting one of these. October was an interesting month for reading, but despite it being my birthday month and a time perhaps for picking up more spooky reads, I didn’t do much of any book shopping, which feels weird. So, on top of things feel a bit weird with work, I’ve let this uneventful month lie unwritten about for almost two weeks. Time to fix that.

Let’s see the new books!

New Books

20241112_190244

The only book I purchased last month was Sword & Citadel by Gene Wolfe, the second half of the series The New Book of the Sun; included within are the books The Sword of the Lichtor and The Citadel of the Autarch. I can’t remember if it was last year or the year before, but I received the first half of this series as a gift recently and decided I ought to round it out with the second book. Normally, I don’t like to buy out a series before I’ve even started it, but I really like how condensed these editions are, so I now possess a four-book series in two volumes. It feels wonderfully efficient, so it’ll be a real shame if I end up not liking them. This time around it wasn’t a gift, but I picked it up at a local store I really like since I hadn’t gone there in a while.

Novel Discoveries

Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees

My only Novel Discovery for October was fittingly Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees by Patrick Horvath, a graphic novel about a quaint and cutesy village of animal folk dealing with a serial killer in their midst. This is the sort of book that grabs you just on its premise, and while I’m definitely wanting to check it out, I’m also a little cautious, as this feels like a gimmick that helps spread word of mouth by being shocking but ends up being shallow and only a gimmick. Cynicism aside, I’m looking forward to checking out the first volume sometime—maybe for Halloween next year.

Until next time, thank you for reading!
