The Three Ws are:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?
Currently Reading
I’m currently approaching the mid-point of A Lush and Seething Hell by John Hornor Jacobs, though specifically I’m a chapter or so shy of the end of the first novella The Sea Dreams It is the Sky. I’ve really enjoyed this story and how it blends cosmic horror, from the position of learning forbidden knowledge and the prices one must pay to utilize such knowledge, with what feels like very real-world political strife, as the main character is from a fictional South American country that has been dealing with bloody regime changes. In presenting what is essentially the translation of a book of magic, I was captivated by the ways that it explained how sacrifice and suffering can be used ritualistically to draw the attention of greater forces in the universe. Though still left feeling upsetting and esoteric, I really liked how it laid out the connection between such rituals, a staple trope of using more profane forms of magic, and how exactly that translates into the execution of a spell, such as it is.
Recently Finished
The other day I read through Bad Dreams in the Night by Adam Ellis, the author/illustrator’s first collection of horror stories. I actually read the second volume by Ellis earlier this year, which prompted me to request that the library pick up this one. I’d say the quality is fairly consistent between the two volumes, though I think I liked this one a bit more. The stories within have a very told-around-a-campfire vibe to them, such that they maybe don’t make too much sense under closer scrutiny, but such scrutiny at all spoils the fun of it. I can’t remember if the second volume included these, but each story in this volume has a little post script by the author that goes a little into his inspiration for the story. I thought that was a nice touch.
Reading Next
I’m worried about timing, with only a little over two weeks left in the month, so I’m going to make sure I read Angel Down by Daniel Kraus next. I’m also planning to read The Last Halloween 1: Children by Abby Howard, which I’ve also borrowed from the library.
Until next time, thank you for reading! Feel free to share your own post down below.
