New Books & Novel Discoveries (June 2024)

All things considered, June was yet another month where I was fairly well behaved with respect to buying books. I gave into an impulse or two, but I also put some things back and decided to abstain. It really is getting to me how little space I have for new books, which really is a pickle when you love buying them.

Anyway, let’s see what I did get.

New Books

Hellboy: Emerald Hell by Tom Piccirilli is a book I’ve been trying to track down for a long time, though my interest has recently been renewed. I may not have liked The Dragon Pool very much, but it did reinvigorate my interest in obtaining the remaining Hellboy novels that I needed, especially since I needed so few at the time. This one was only in “Acceptable” condition and it shows, but the pages are clean without any notes in the margins (which was a possibility in this condition), so I do indeed find it to be acceptable. Anything higher was a tad too expensive, so I decided to take a risk on this condition and hope for the best. Now I only need one more of these novels.

The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell is a book I’m honestly surprised I didn’t own already, especially from my days of buying up any mythology-related books I could think of. I’m 95% certain I don’t have a copy, though, and finding a nice hardcover like this secondhand was an acceptable impulse purchase. The only blemish is on the inside cover, with a dedication to a “beloved” who clearly wasn’t very sentimental because it’s dated 2017. I decided to include a label sticker with my own note for posterity, after this book ends up in somebody else’s hands.

Novel Discoveries

Hellboy in Love by Mike Mignola et al. is a graphic novel about Hellboy’s relationship with Dr. Anastasia Bransfield, which had previously only been seen in the novels The Lost Army and The Dragon Pool. I don’t know why Christopher Golden’s books are given special treatment and granted a place in the canon, but I fell in love with this series as comics, so maybe this book will endear me to their relationship more; I do like it fine, but the novels that have included it were only okay at best.

Death with Interruptions by José Saramago is a book I believe I recently learned about from another blog’s WWW post. It involves a world grappling with immortality and a personification of the grim reaper falling in love. What’s not to like?

Like a Trophy from the Sun by Jason Heroux is a book of poetry I learned of from a local bookstore posting about it; apparently, the author is a local too, which is nice. I try to get myself to read poetry sometimes, and this title inspired enough interest that I decided to keep it in mind, just in case I get the chance to read it. Not sure I’ll buy it, but I’ll at least borrow it from the library if I can.

Until next time, thank you for reading!
