Frighteningly Good Reads 2024 Wrap-Up

Once again, the Halloween season has come and gone, and it’s time to look back at all of the spooky books I managed to read in this year’s horror reading showcase hosted by Silver Button Books.

I feel like I did a little better last year, and there were a couple of books that I’m disappointed I failed to read, but I’m still rather happy with how things turned out. Below are my Frighteningly Good Reads for 2024, though the selection looks a little different from what I presented at the start of last month.

Firstly, I was really happy I was able to read this edition of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley that includes illustrations by Bernie Wrightson; I finished it rather quickly too! It’s one of my favourite classic books and it was a lot of fun revisiting it after so long.

Unfortunately, the only other book that survived from my initial selection was Vermis II: Mist & Mirrors by Plastiboo, which I enjoyed even more than the first volume, as it followed more of plot line while still keeping to the video game guide motif. The art continued to be fantastic as well. I really hope there is a third volume coming to at least make a nice little trilogy of it.

The biggest surprise for me was Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero; after finishing Frankenstein so quickly, I realized I had time to read another full novel, which was mostly true. Unfortunately, I didn’t actually finish it until November 4, but I read the bulk of it in October, and I’ll be damned if I don’t give myself at least a little credit for that.

At the outset, I also wanted to read add at least one library book but hadn’t settled on any yet. Well, I ended up reading two library books: Sherlock Holmes and the Necronomicon by Sylvain Cordurié and Loving, Ohio by Matthew Erman. Unfortunately, I wish I had put my time into the graphic novels I initially listed, as I did not like these books very much, ultimately giving both of them both two stars on Goodreads. Not everything is a hit, and at least I only borrowed them.

Finally, here is my Bingo card for this year’s challenge, which was also included in the initial post over on Silver Button Books. I’m assuming you can stamp the card for any of the books that apply, even repeats. Considering I only read five books, I feel like I did quite well! So close, but no Bingo for me.

I hope everyone else had a great Halloween. Let me know what you read this year. Thank you for reading!

  1. Hi Ryan, I have not heard of this reading challenge before. However I did take part in the R.eaders I.mbibing P.eril XIX challenge which is a little similar – For that I finished four books and I am still reading one. Glad you enjoyed ‘most’ of your spooky reading 👻
    Blessings, Jessica 💌

  2. Congtatulations on your reading! The pumpkin in the middle is supposed to be a free spot so you did get a Bingo! I also counted my books for multiple spots but failed to bingo myself. There is always next year.

I love that you gave yourself credit for Meddling Kids. I would absolutely do the same, rigidity undermines the joy of reading.

Thanks, as always, for participating and bringing so many scarier books to my attention!

    • Goodness, you’re right. I have no idea how I forgot that the free space counts 😅 Hooray for me, thank you for pointing that out.
