The Three Ws are:
What are you currently reading?
What did you recently finish reading?
What do you think you’ll read next?
Currently Reading
I regret that I didn’t post more during October, but unfortunately workload made reading time a little harder to come by. On top of that, a few things in my personal life became fraught in a way that made everything a little more difficult all-around. Nevertheless, I have started reading The Last Halloween: Children by Abby Howard. Regrettably, I didn’t start reading this until yesterday, so I did not read it in celebration of the Halloween season as planned, and more’s the pity, as this book is perfect for it. I’ve only read the first chapter so far, but I love how much it feels like Howard is channeling Invader Zim, except of course this is a lot more violent. She channels it effectively as well, which I feel is worth pointing out because it’s a dark comedic style/tone that could be off-putting or annoying if not done right. I’m hoping I can finish reading it this week.
Recently Finished
On Monday, I finally finished reading A Lush and Seething Hell by John Hornor Jacobs. Last time I posted, I was close to finishing the first novella, The Sea Dreams It is the Sky, so the latter half of October I spent reading the second, slightly longer story My Heart Struck Sorrow, which is about an archivist from the Library of Congress traveling the back roads of America to record and preserve folk music, personally hunting down earlier versions of a song with origins more infernal the more he uncovers about it. Though I regret that this is the only full-length novel I finished, I take some consolation that this book contained two great cosmic horror stories, so it doesn’t feel too much that I languished within one book/story for too long. I really enjoyed this book, especially the way that each (broadly speaking) delves into the idea of pursuing/uncovering forbidden knowledge. If you want to read some cosmic horror that isn’t written by the usual suspects, check this one out.
Reading Next
I feel inclined to finish up my Halloween reading plans beyond The Last Halloween, but I really do need to finish The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. I’m in the home stretch at this point, but that still means a few hundred pages. The break has been nice, but I need to finish this novel finally or I’m going to lose it. I don’t like how being stuck in this middle of this one for so long has made my reading feel stagnated.
Until next time, thank you for reading! Feel free to share your own post down below.
