Books on My Summer 2023 To-Read List

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly book meme run by That Artsy Reader Girl. I really like putting together lists like this when they come around, but it’s funny that I always have to think of the caveat that it’s very unlikely that I will actually read all ten of the books I end up listing. My reading pace is just too slow. Still, I like to get an idea of what I want to be reading in the coming months, and this forces me to think about a little more than a small handful of titles.

The Lost World by Michael Crichton

The Lost World

I’m currently rereading Jurassic Park right now, and I’ve decided I want to read the sequel soon after. Lucky for me, I bought both books at the same time, so I’m planning to start the second one soon, maybe with just one other book in between as a buffer.

Carpe Jugulum by Terry Pratchett

Carpe Jugulum

I feel like this has been included in a few lists at this point, but I really mean to commit to reading this book soon. The Discworld books have been really neglected this year so far, and I really want to read at least a couple. I still have so many left in the series.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess manga by Akira Himekawa

The Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess 1

This is actually in reference to an entire series rather than one book, but since it’s a limited manga series, reading all of it is actually feasible. I’ve already read the first two volumes thanks to my library, and hopefully I will be able to read all of them that way, since I don’t want to commit the shelf space to 11 volumes. Frustratingly, the library only has volumes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, but I’m hoping I can get them to at least fill that frustrating volume 3 absence.

This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar & Max Gladstone

This is How You Lose the Time War

A while ago I started to seriously wonder what I want my vacation read to be; I’m going to a destination wedding in August, where I’ll be spending a week at a resort. Though there’s a good chance I’ll not read much of it, if at all, in favour of doing other things, I’ve committed to bringing this book along anyway. I’ve heard great things about it, and it’s short enough that I might actually be able to finish it.

Tombs by Junji Ito

Tombs

I’ve owned this book for a while now, but for some reason I’ve not gotten around to reading it as quickly as other Ito books that I’ve picked up. Since it will be summer by the time I read this whether I like it or not, this has got to be on the summer to-read list.

The Complete Poetry of Edgar Allan Poe

The Complete Poetry of Edgar Allan Poe

Every so often, I try to make myself read some poetry, even though it’s not something I always take to very well. This book is decently short, however, and I do really like the poem “The Raven”, so I want to try to read through this soon. I’m hoping it resonates with me.

The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman

The Yellow Wallpaper 2

I’ve heard some talk about this short story lately as a great horror story and piece of feminist literature, so I picked up a printing of this story on its own that is essentially a booklet. It didn’t end up being as high quality as I would’ve liked, and my expectations were not high, but I enjoy having it in this format anyway. Also, it being a literal book on its own makes it feel more appropriate including it here, rather than listing a PDF I found online.

Hellboy: The Dragon Pool by Christopher Golden

Hellboy The Dragon Pool

Admittedly, I’m not super determined to read this book, but I’ve been slowly going through the semi-canon Hellboy novels for a while now, though I’ve not read another one for almost two years now. So, I really ought to start mentally committing to reading this next book. I think this one is actually considered canon because Golden has a closer association with Mike Mignola, I think? I’m not really sure.

The Rise and Reign of the Mammals by Steve Brusatte

The Rise and Reign of the Mammals

I feel like there’s a really good chance I won’t be getting around to reading this book either, but I try to make room for nonfiction from time to time and I really enjoyed The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs, so if I read any nonfiction this summer, it’ll be this one.

The High Republic: The Rising Storm by Cavan Scott

The Rising Storm

Of all books listed here, I feel like I’m the least likely to read this one during summer, but I’m sad that I haven’t properly kept up with this series. Maybe the mood will strike me and I will start this one over another, we will see. Either way, I will probably try to read this before 2023 is over.

Until next time, thank you for reading! Feel free to share your own list down below.
